Starting or Developing YOUR Art Practice

Beginning this winter break, I will be hosting multi-day workshops at the studio for a very limited number of guests, and then expanding in the summer with a number of one-week workshops and one advanced two-week workshop. Each session will culminate in a show/private viewing.

About Kate:

The workshops will be led by Kate Howe (me!). Kate holds a BA (summa cum laude) in Art History from Arizona State University and an AA in Technical Theatre (Scenic design, Scenic Painting and Lighting Design) from Foothill College. She has also studied painting at Boston’s School for the Museum of Fine Arts, Pasadena’s Art Center College of Design, and Aspen’s Anderson Ranch.

Kate is currently in her second year at the Royal College of Art (MA Painting) and earned a Distinction on her dissertation Turner was my Covid hook-up which you can read here

Kate has been an educator in yoga, bodywork, mountaineering, skiing, and rock climbing at the teacher-trainer level for twenty-four years and brings her life-long study of Buddhist philosophy to her contemplative and compassionate teaching style.

Starting or Developing YOUR Art Practice
Painting Workshops

Visual artists make art when words fail them. We all have a need to make. For some, that drive is difficult to resist. I can’t resist it any more, I have to make work all the time, and I’d like to share that experience with you.

Workshops include:

  • One-on-one and group workshop tutorials with Kate

  • Studio space at Kate Howe Studios with table and easel

  • 24-hour access to the studios for the duration of the workshop

  • Positive and supportive group critiques

  • Optional readings and discussions

  • Mealtimes together on the patio (meals not included, coffee/tea/afternoon drinks are).

  • Group Show/Private Viewing in RuptureXIBIT at the conclusion

  • Workshops will run 9-5 but the studio is yours for the week while you are enrolled in the workshop

I’m pleased to announce that Bodhi Wight, my daughter (who is also an incredibly talented painter and draftsperson) will be assisting me in these workshops. She will be available to answer technical questions and help you find what you need to be comfortable and efficient in the studio. Bodhi works in various media, including oil, acrylic, watercolor, gouache, pen and ink, and digital. She has an outstanding background in color theory and anatomy.

On the longer workshops, we will have the option to take a day to go on a gallery tour together in London and have dinner.

At the end of each workshop, the group will mount a show and hold a Private View in RuptureXIBIT to celebrate their work and time together.

Each workshop has six spaces only. One space will be available for full scholarship by application based on need and merit.

To apply for scholarship: please send CV, and bio/artist statement of no more than 500 words, three images, and a short (500 word max) essay stating your aspirations for your practice and why the workshop would be valuable to your practice in particular (please go beyond a need for space) to veronika@katehowe.com with the subject line WORKSHOP SCHOLARSHIP.

Winter Break Scholarship Deadline: Dec. 1 at 5 pm.
